People and the River  

The People and the River theme is an exploration of the diverse cultures, livelihoods and the dependency that of people in the Limpopo River basin have on the environment, including:

  • People of the Basin - a discussion of the people living in the four basin states, their histories, cultures, and traditional ways of life.
  • Socioeconomics in the Basin - an exploration of the distribution of economic activities in the basin.
  • Environment and Well Being - discusses how the environment contributes to the well-being of people, through environmental goods and services and access to water and food security.
  • Human Development Initiatives - looks at development in the basin in terms of vulnerability, poverty alleviation, access to water and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The history and culture of southern Africa and the Limpopo River basin are diverse and rich. The remarks and observations presented in this theme are intended to be introductory in nature and a starting point for further reading.

The people of the basin represent a broad spectrum of cultures and ethnicities.
